The Five Most Problematic Statements by Indian Politicians

politicians

Bizzare, sexist, misogynistic, and insensitive statements from famous personalities no longer surprise us. They have become that frequent and common. Especially our lawmakers, our representatives never fail to disappoint us with their obscene mentality. Recently after Tirath Rawat, the CM of Uttarakhand let his opinion out on women wearing ripped jeans, a lot of criticism has been doing rounds across Twitter and other social media sites. In this article, we shall be discussing the 5 most disgusting statements made by politicians and on records!

Digvijay Singh :

Singh was in Indore, talking to his party workers about Meenakshi Natrajan who was an MP from Mandsaur (Madhya Pradesh). Describing her, he said “Gandhiwadi hain, Saral hain, imaandar hain. Sabke paas jaati hain, gaon gaon jaati hain. Rajneetigyon ko thodi si baat me pata chal jaata hai ki kaun farzi hai, kaun sahi hai.

Main purana jauhri hoon, ye 100% tunch maal hai.” Calling a woman “tunch maal” which can be translated to “desirable object” is the last thing you would want to utter. He received a lot of backlash on twitter for the same. However, in his defense, he let the world know that he didn’t mean it in an objectionable manner, instead, he was just complimenting the lady!

Mangal Pandey :

Mangal Pandey, the health minister of Bihar created a major controversy when the forms that were to be filled by the applicants applying for the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences came out. The forms provided the candidates with 3 options for their marital status. The options were :

  • I am married and have only one wife living.
  • I am married to a person who has no other wife living.
  • I am married to a person who has another wife living.

According to the form, the applicants had to prove their “virginity” to get admission to the college. Instead of criticizing the institute, Mangal Pandey said, “Virgin, as per the dictionary, means an unmarried and pure girl. So all these words are not objectionable”.

Mulayam Singh :

In 2014, a Gang Rape was committed in the state of Uttar Pradesh. After the investigation, three men were accused of the same. Instead of taking strict actions against the convicts of the case, here’s what Mulayam Singh said, “boys will be boys, they commit mistakes.” These sentences were said by Mulayam Singh to defend the convicts when the entire country wanted them to be hanged to death.

He did not stop here, instead went on to add that it is the women who become friendly with men and after some time when things change and don’t go their way, they fight with men and then call it rape. The next year, Mulayam Singh called UP the best state and next what is said could shatter your peace of mind. He said that it is not possible for four men to rape the same woman at the same time. Therefore, most of the cases and complaints of gang rapes are baseless and fake. In most cases only one man is responsible for the crime and the others are just pulled into it. He asserted, “I know of many such cases, where 1 person commits the rape and 4 people are named in the report. There are cases where one person commits a crime, 4 brothers in the same family get arrested.”

Mamta Banerjee :

Indian women have been in governance for a long time and the leaders that India has seen, we feel proud of them and look at them as role models. These women had a clear perspective and the ability to keep the country together. However, Mamta Banerjee has been disappointing enough at addressing crimes against women. The Chief Minister of West Bengal said, “You say rape incidents are on the rise. But the population is also swelling. Is the population in the state the same as it was during the tenure of (the state’s second chief minister) BC Roy?” She went on to compare rapes with cars! “There are more cars now. Shopping malls are increasing. Young boys and girls are becoming more modern.”

And when you thought this was it, it wasn’t!

She said, “Earlier if men and women held hands, parents would reprimand them. Now everything is done openly. It’s like an open market with open options.” So if Mamta Banerjee was to be believed, everything else, including the population, the cars, the women who befriend men and are around them, are responsible for rapes, but not the rapist.

Mohan Bhagwat :

The RSS chief during one of his interviews in 2013, held the westernization of India responsible for the increasing, rather “existing” rape cases in the country. According to him, rapes happened in “India” and not in “Bharat. Crimes against women happening in urban India are shameful. It is a dangerous trend. But such crimes won’t happen in “Bharat” or the rural areas of the country. You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gang-rape or sex crimes. Where “Bharat” becomes “India” with the influence of western culture, these types of incidents happen. The actual Indian values and culture should be established at every stratum of society where women are treated as ‘mother’.”

Because obviously, Rapes have inspired and learned from the western culture. And as per the history of “Bharat”, we do not have the description or mention of rape cases in history. Also, Rapes happen in cities, and never in the rural areas, if Mohan Bhagwat, the right-wing RSS chief was to be believed.

The most disgusting part about these statements is that the people making these statements and putting them right up before the world to read or listen to them are the ones we have trusted with our country’s governance. It is a failure on our part for not having chosen suitable leaders and instead, we have chosen the time and again, even after these statements were already made, excusing ourselves with, “there wasn’t a better or more suitable option.”
