Travel Guide: How to Choose a Bike Rack for an SUV and Truck

How to choose a bike rack for an SUV or crossover

Most bike racks can be used on SUVs and crossbars such as the Honda CR-V, Ford Explorer and Toyota 4Runner. Because many sports vans are designed for heavier use than the average cabriolet, they tend to have a cabin or window sill. If your SUV has these additional features, you can use one of three main types of bike racks: a tow bar, a roof rack and a trunk. And you don’t need to install additional equipment on your vehicle.

Take a look at these four main types of bike racks:

Train bar Mounted – These racks attach to a trainbar at the rear of your vehicle

Roof-mounted – these are connected to a transverse beam roof system

Shaft mounted – these racks are attached to the shaft, doors or rear doors of your car, van or SUV

Mounted on spare tires – these brackets attach to the spare tires at the rear of your vehicle

Sucked – these suitcases attach to the bar, roof or glass of your car, van or SUV

Bicycle carrier mounted on the towing hook

Hitch-mounted bike racks are easy to install and remove from a cab behind the SUV. Because these grilles are attached to a tow bar and do not touch your SUV, there is no risk of damaging the paint of your vehicle. If your SUV has a rear-mounted spare tire, you need to make sure the side rack is long enough to clean.

The length of the shaft (the part of the rack that slides into the fuselage) varies between rack models, with some pushing bikes farther from the rear of the vehicle than others. If you want to open the back door or doors of your SUV while the suitcase is installed, consider tilting and turning the suitcases. Racks with these features tilt down or turn on hinges for access.

If your SUV has no problem, you can install one. In fact, most towbars can be installed with simple hand tools and do not require drilling into your vehicle. In our Fit guide, you will find an exhibition stand perfectly suited to your SUV.

Pros

  • Easy to install and remove
  • Easy to assemble bikes
  • Large capacity – up to 5 bikes
  • No damage to the paint of the vehicle

Cons

  • Interruption of access to hatches
  • Requires a tow hook
  • Prohibition to use the bar for towing
  • Special bicycle carriers allow towing

Roof-mounted bicycle

A big advantage of indoor bike racks is that you can easily access the back of your SUV. This approach can be important if you are dragging a trailer, using a link, or if you need to frequently load or unload transmissions. In addition, a roof rack will not affect your vehicle and therefore will not scratch the paint.

To mount bikes, you need to lift them higher than you would with a rack mounted with a trailer problem or trunk. It can be difficult to load a bicycle. You may need a ladder to put your bike on the roof. You can carry several bikes on your roof, but you need a grille for each bike. The maximum number of bikes you can carry is limited only by the width of your transverse member and the heavy limits of the transverse member and roof of your SUV.

If your SUV doesn’t have diagonals, you can install them or install them yourself. In our Fitguide you will find a suitcase that is suitable for your vehicle.

Pros

  • Easy to install and remove
  • It allows full access to the rear of the vehicle
  • No damage to the paint of the vehicle

Cons

  • Loading bikes can be a problem
  • Requires transverse bars
  • Every bike needs a suitcase

Bearing-mounted bicycle racks are attached to a hatch or doors to an SUV with hooks, straps and buckles. Most of these devices are padded when they come in contact with your vehicle.

To prevent your SUV paint from getting scratched or scratched, make sure the paint is clean and free of dirt before installing the roof rack. If your SUV has a spoiler, you can still use the trunk. There are many models designed for use on vehicles equipped with spoilers. Avoid storage racks if your SUV has a rear-mounted spare wheel or an automatic rear wiper.
